Progetto 6: Nuove Aule alla Primary School a Kalangoni
The school was started since 2018 by the community. It is located along the Malindi-Salagate main road about 90km away from Malindi town. From the tamarc road junction it stretches 6km towards Galana river.
The school rests on a 20-acre plot of land. The land is fairly flat fit for a school premises. The land was donated by the community. Specifically it is the Amwamweni clan of the Mijikenda community which gave the land for the purpose of the school. The land agreement is attatched below.
There is only one permanent building of two classrooms, donated by the county government. There is also a two roomed muddy temporary building constructed by the parents. This one hosts grade 1 (one) learners in one and the second room is being used by the grade 2 (two) students.
The school is faced with numerous unspeakable challenges. Key of them is the issue of school infrastructure. The economic levels of the community around is very low and can not cater for the school infrastructional needs The neighboring schools are very far for the young learners to walk to and get their education. The distances are as follows:
- Paola Katsuhanzala is approximately 20km away
- Kulalu Primary is approximately 10 km
- PCEA Bombi is approximately 8km, but across the river
Many children from the area are currently walking across the river to Bombi for their education. These children crossing the river are at a great risk of being attacked by hippos. Unfortunately still, when the river floods, then these learners are automatically cut off from school. This together with the risk of hippos discourages many of them and is therefore a clean cause of school dropouts.
Again it is very dangerous for the children to walk alone in the forested routes as the area is infested with wild animals such as elephants, that can attack the helpless youngsters.
